Artist Statement
From tea pots and bowls to sculpture and more…I continue to explore new series of works in clay. After working with other mediums for several years, I discovered clay in 2012 and have placed my focus on ceramics.
Working in 3d is just so much more gratifying to me. Viewers will notice my preference for hand building techniques, primarily working with slabs. The surface treatments may range from smooth, shiny, slick finishes to textured, matte and natural.
I have designed and created both functional ware and non-functional pieces. I spent a few months producing a series of tea pots. I then moved toward sculpture and produced a series inspired by physical geologic features such as wave and soil erosion, sand dunes, sea stacks, sea arches, and sedimentary layers. I worked on a series of non-representational sculptures that drew attention to negative, open and closed spaces. In my most recent work, I designed and crafted bird sculptures for a conceptual series to draw attention to human impact on wildlife habitat and resulting declining populations.
Ever evolving and curious about the medium, I continue to experiment with form and function in one way or another, whether the work is carefully planned or spontaneous and intuitive. My hope is to gain a real sense of myself and others that resonates across the spectrum of emotions that we all experience and share. A moment of thought provoking silence, while viewing a piece of art, allows space and insight for inspiration and motivation in our own endeavors whatever they may be.
